Adjusting the Hardware Functionality Using the BIOS

Adjusting the Hardware Functionality Using the BIOS

Current BIOSes have interfaces allowing you to make changes such as:

  • Date and Time
  • Boot Sequence
  • System and Hard Drive Passwords
  • Restore the BIOS to the Default Configuration
  • Turning on or off modular add-on devices
  • Adjusting LCD Brightness (on laptop computers)
  • Adjusting the Hard Drive Noise Level
  • Adjusting the number of cores the processor is using and the speed they are functioning

Notice:
Incorrectly changing BIOS settings may leave the computer in a state in which the operating system no longer starts. We therefore recommend that you record the original BIOS settings before you modify them.

What is a BIOS ?

What is a BIOS?

The acronym BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. When the computer is first started, the BIOS activates all of the hardware required by the computer to boot including:

  • Chipsets
  • Processors and Caches
  • System Memory
  • Internal Drives
  • Graphics and Audio Controllers
  • Internal Expansion Cards

After the BIOS completes this process, it transfers control of the computer to the operating system.

How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password

by Bryce Whitty
A BIOS password is a protection measure that can be used to stop someone powering up a computer system or making changes in some of the computers most sensitive areas. Many big name computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP lock the customers out of this area because they don’t want the customer changing anything and potentially damaging the machine (which the manufacturer may have to warranty). However, when someone like a computer technician or hardware enthusiast needs to make some hardware changes to the computer, they will need to access the BIOS. Here are some methods to bypass or remove a BIOS password.

NOTE: Do not try to guess the password on a passworded Hard Drive. 3 wrong guesses will often result in the information on the hard drive being lost forever.

How to Bypass or Remove a BIOS Password by Removing the CMOS Battery:
The simplest way to remove a BIOS password is to simply remove the CMOS battery. A computer will remember its settings and keep the time even when it is turned off and unplugged because these parts are powered by small battery inside the computer called a CMOS battery. If we pull out this battery, the computer will forget alot of its hardware settings, including its BIOS password. This should not be performed on Laptops if you are not experienced working with laptop hardware.

Finding the CMOS BatteryAnyway, open up the computer case using a screw driver and locate the flat, circular and metallic CMOS battery. It should look something like the picture to the right. Some computers have this part standing upright.

Once you have located it, observe how the latches are holding it. There are many different ways to remove a CMOS battery but the most common way on newer computers can be seen in the picture below.

Removing the CMOS Battery

Make sure to power down the computer, unplug the power cables and unplug any USB devices if they are powered. The computer must not be able to get power from anywhere for this to work. Take out the CMOS battery and wait 10 – 25 minutes before putting it back in. The reason for this wait is because the computer can still store power in its capacitors even though everything is unplugged. The waiting period allows enough time for them to discharge.

Plug everything back in, power up the computer and enter the BIOS again. If everything went well there should be no more password. In some cases, if you get weird error messages during bootup now, you will need to goto “Load BIOS Defaults” in BIOS and save the changes to fix them.

Dell/IBM lose ground to rivals in the federal computer market

Dell and International Business Machines, the leaders in the U.S. government’s biggest purchasing program for computer products and services, lost ground to rivals as agencies tightened spending and set up their own contracts.
Sales through the General Services Administration’s Schedule 70 contracts were $16.03 billion in fiscal 2010, declining 4.7 percent from $16.8 billion in 2007, according to data compiled from company-reported information collected by the GSA.
The contracts cover software supplies and support equipment. Sales under the contracting scheme fell 3.4 percent since 2009 for Dell and 23 percent for IBM, which remained the top companies with combined sales of $1.39 billion. Among the biggest 2010 gainers were McLean-based Science Applications International Corp. and Computer Sciences Corp. of Falls Church, with combined orders of $667.9 million in 2010. Their sales rose 17 percent and 14 percent respectively from 2009.
“Federal, state, and local governments are facing budgetary restraints which impact their spending and in turn our revenue,” Patricia Waddell, GSA’s deputy director of Schedule 70 business programs, said in an Aug. 25 e-mail. “Agencies are creating their own acquisition vehicles and supplementing their needs internally, rather than reaching out to GSA.”

Dell Latitude BIOS Password Recovery

Christophe Grenier wrote a program that calculates the master BIOS password for Dell Latitudes from the Service Tag number. That program is available here.
If a Latitude cannot be booted to run this program, call Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896 to get the master password.
Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of the Latitude.
If the current user is not the original Latitude owner, Dell will transfer the used Latitude’s registration from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.
To transfer a used Dell Latitude’s registration, fill out the Transfer of Ownership form on Dell’s web site.

Dell Optiplex BIOS Password Recovery

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Optiplex by removing the password jumper (PSWD) from the motherboard.

The location of the password jumper on a Dell Optiplex motherboard can be found by reviewing the Optiplex User Guides.

For most Dell Optiplex desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

Dell Dimension BIOS Password Recovery

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Dimension by moving the password jumper on the motherboard.

The location of the password jumper on a Dell Dimension motherboard can be found by reviewing the Dimension User Guides.

For most Dell Dimension desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

You don’t need to be an expert to reset a Dell BIOS password

You don’t need to be an expert to reset a Dell BIOS password. There are however a few tools that you need to have should you decide to do this.

Requirements

  • Motherboard manual or user guide
  • Dell computer user guide
  • Dell Service Tag
  • Dell Express Service Code
  • Recovery software (optional)
  • Internet access
  • Registration card

Instructions

Method 1: Change the Motherboard Jumpers

Get your motherboard manual and look at the motherboard diagram. Look for the password jumper. There should be a mark or label there indicating which one it is. This is usually the 3 pin CMOS jumper.

When you see it, open the computer case. If necessary take the user guide and compare the layout. The pins will be labeled or on “1″ and “2″. To reset a Dell BIOS password, pull off the two jumpers. Place them on the number 2 and 3 pins. Leave them there for 5 seconds. Now, pull the jumpers off and set them on pins 1 and 2.

Method 2: Call Technical Support

In some cases only a call to technical support will allow you to recover it. What the technical support will do is use the master password. This is similar to the backdoor password used by other companies. This is a code that will work on most models.

Before you call technical support, make sure you have the Service Tag and the Express Service Code. Having your registration card may also be required so take it with you too. When you have all the necessary information, call the technical support staff and they will reset a Dell BIOS password.

Method 3: Use Recovery Software

There are several programs on the Internet designed to reset and recover these types of data. You just have to go online. At your favorite search engine, enter your computer name and model along with “password recovery” or something similar.

If you can’t find a specific software, you can post a message on a forum. Post the pertinent data (computer model, BIOS settings etc). There are plenty of forums on the Net, so you can set the message in as many forums as possible.

When you get the software, download and install it. Follow the instructions so you will be able to reset a Dell BIOS password.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be careful when you adjust the jumpers on the BIOS and CMOS settings. If you make a mistake, you might damage the PC or erase other data. Double check the manual to avoid mistakes. Be certain that the computer is turned off before attempting this.
  • This procedure is for Dell computers only. If you are using other models, check the user guides for the appropriate steps to take. Also, some Dell models have unique specifications and troubleshooting techniques. Refer to the user guides for more info.
  • Learning how to reset a Dell BIOS password is easier now than it has been in the past. As long as you take the right precautions you won’t have any problems getting this right.

unlock Dell laptop password to BIOS

The most frequent reason people don't know a laptop password is the laptop was stolen, or they're trying to access a computer that's not theirs that they shouldn't have the right to access, but if it is unknown for some other reason, contact the seller to see if you can contact whoever installed the password - e.g. the computer administrator for a business that owned the computer .

The passwords on laptops and netbooks made in the last ten years or so are not stored in the bios - they're stored in a separate chip on the mboard that cannot have the user contents erased by removing the power to it, or by clearing the Cmos contents.
Almost all software and info meant for removing passwords on older laptops does not work on newer laptops.
When a drivelock password has been used, the info about whether the hard drive is locked is also stored on the hard drive in a data area that is not accessible by you using any normal or easily available free special software. If you were to transfer the drivelocked hard drive to another computer with a bios version compatible with removing the drivelock that does not have a drivelock pass word enabled, you still would still not be able to access the hard drive if you don't know the password.
You could replace the mboard with a used one you bought on the web that has no password to get rid of a bios or system access password(s) problem, but you still wouldn't be able to access a drivelocked hard drive if you don't know the password.

Don't clear the CMOS

Don't clear the CMOS of your Notebook, because it will not reset any BIOS-Boot password or BIOS-Setup password! Notebooks have better theft protections like an additional (tiny, hidden) IC-integrated module that contains the password. Some manufacturers store the password on a hidden hard disk sector. So, the only solution is a direct contact to the manufacturer's support, where they proof that you are the legal owner of the notebook. Depending on the manufacturer, you have to send him the serial number of the notebook and you'll get (in many cases free of charge) an individual master password to unlock the notebook. Some other manufacturers even offer only the replacement of the notebook's mainboard - which will be really expensive!
